We also produce a popular daily podcast, The NPR Politics Podcast, on our desk.

This full-time Washington Desk Editor will help shape and execute our digital and broadcast coverage on all platforms. This editor will work afternoons and evenings and take the lead in speaking for the desk in the evenings, working closely with correspondents and editing stories for digital and for All Things Considered, Morning Edition and Up First. This editor will be the point person for newsroom leaders and shows when Washington news breaks in the evenings,

helping to sort and scramble coverage. Among the best parts of this job is getting to work with all of the desk's talented reporters and being empowered to make important editorial and coverage decisions.

The job requires attention to detail, big picture thinking and concern about craft. The editor must have excellent news judgment and the ability to work collaboratively -- but also have the confidence to work independently. This editor should have experience and a passion for covering political and policy news. A premium will be placed on candidates with digital editing experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Act as lead representative for Washington Desk in evenings, providing editorial guidance to shows and the newsroom on Washington and political stories; organizing and revising coverage as news warrants;
• Confirm news, clear sourcing with news managers and disseminate reporting as needed;
• Work closely with evening digital reporter to assign and edit timely stories for NPR.org;
• Assign and edit policy and political stories that will be featured on all NPR digital and broadcast platforms, working with reporters across the Washington Desk;
• Work with beat editors and reporters to ensure stories are told in the voice and form best suited to the given platform;
• Collaboratively plan news and feature coverage of policy and politics for NPR, NPR.org and the NPR Politics social channels;
• Generate story and project ideas, especially for digital platforms, and edit/manage such efforts;
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent required.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• 5+ years of experience editing news stories at the national level;
• Experience in editorial decision-making, including assigning reporters/correspondents;
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities/conditions;
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure;
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts;
• Demonstrated team collaboration and leadership skills;
• Experience in digital media, including editing copy.

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience editing for radio;
• Familiarity with NPR member stations and public media system;
• Expertise in writing, with excellence in news writing, copy-editing and headline writing;
• Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas, to assimilate and organize large amounts of information.
