NPR is looking for a Deputy Supervising Senior Editor to help lead the network's award-winning Science Desk coverage. This position will work with a team of editors managing and guiding editorial strategy and developing content as we endeavor to reach growing audiences on several platforms. The ideal candidate is passionate about science with deep knowledge in some of the editorial areas we cover. In the near term, this position will play a key role in managing the desk's coverage of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

This position will work with a talented team of science journalists covering a breadth of topics, including; the latest research and news in medicine, health care, space, technology and other areas of science. In addition, we look at how this news influences policy and impacts society.
Our coverage also explores how two global crises, the Covid-19 pandemic and a warming climate, are disproportionately affecting some communities already vulnerable due to societal inequities.

The Deputy Supervising Senior Editor will work with the Chief Science Editor to help foster innovation across teams and support staff to be forward thinking as we continue to strive to be relevant to our audiences. The ideal candidate is curious, smart, innovative, flexible and can juggle deadlines, as well as lead enterprise and high impact, human centered, coverage.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop, assign and edit original and breaking health coverage that lives up to NPR's standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
• Edit compelling stories for both audio and print, often on tight deadlines.
• Supervise team members, providing strong consistent leadership of the team, including regular constructive feedback on performance.
• Work collaboratively with team members, other NPR employees, Member station reporters and editors and external editorial partners in developing high impact projects connected to significant news developments.
• Supervise at least [7] direct reports, including preparing their regular performance reviews, and making effective recommendations regarding any hiring, promotion, and discipline for these positions.
• Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture

QUALIFICATIONS
• 10 years of journalism experience delivering to multiple platforms, some time, preferably, at the national level. More than 5 years of supervisory experience.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions

REQUIRED SKILLS
• Considerable knowledge of general science and health topics
• Ability to identify health and science stories and trends and frame news in a way that communicates to audiences how it will impact them
• Strong leadership skills and experience to manage and develop a team, recognize and grow talent, leverage resources and act as persuasive and persistent advocate of all of our coverage and new initiatives
• Strong oral and written communication skills

PREFERRED
• Experience editing for radio preferred. Familiarity with NPR member stations and public media system appreciated.
