Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy
• Member of NPR's Senior Leadership team determining/clarifying NPR's path forward to achieve our mission and current strategic plan
• A thought partner in shaping strategy of the News Division's work towards NPR's goals. Applying a systematic approach to business decisions, using the right data inputs to make decisions.
• Strategic partner for News senior leadership helping them with business plans, new ventures, resource allocation changes and general program/department management channeling SVP's directional desires. Including reorganize teams so that staffing and other resources are best used to achieve stated goals of the show (revenue, audience, content)
Operations
• Oversee the planning, management and implementation of the team structure, finance including $94 million budget activities for all News Division departments. This includes partnering with News leadership and HR to set strategic direction on News goals, cross-functional initiatives, and content development.
• Metrics & Evaluation: Oversee the planning, implementation and tracking of specific short-term and long-term programmatic and operational projects to improve business effectiveness and efficiency with specified deliverables –setting and measuring audience/financial/mission-based goals, structure and resource planning in pursuit of those goals
• Day to Day operational planning of senior leadership – prioritization of work in a limited resources environment, problem solver – the go to person to making things happen and remove obstacles
• Advise on inter-departmental communication and collaboration improvement and system building working with Project Management team
• Occasionally backfill in key news leadership roles

Communication
• Visualization of strategy for presentations to NPR senior team and other departments – priority articulation for staff, donors, board
• Orchestrate internal communications around priorities and strategies to achieve priorities
• Supervise general communications around everything from community news to leadership priority and mission work. Community building events through written communication, team social and professional gatherings, All Staffs, etc.
• Supervise senior team communications through All Staffs, Direct Reports meetings, 945, leadership team meetings. Action oriented work – what are we focusing on, making decisions on, moving forward, etc.

People
• Budget; partner with Finance & HR to review and forecast salary, retention and new headcount.
• Labor Relations; partner with Legal and HR on management of the CBA and creation of contracts.
• DEI work; partner with News leadership, DEI and HR to implement DEI goals and monitor progress.
• HR work, partner with newsroom business partners to help resolve personnel issues as they arise.
• Programming division, partner with Chief of Staff for Programming on shared initiatives ensuring consistency and cross departmental collaboration
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
• Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture
• Potential to supervise at least 3 direct reports, including preparing their regular performance reviews, and making effective recommendations regarding any hiring, promotion, and discipline for these positions.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: A bachelor's degree is preferred

WORK LOCATION: This is an onsite role at our Washington, DC office. Some WFH flexibility allowed.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• Strong background and understanding of journalism across a multi-platform national organization
• Superior organizational, writing and presentation skills using all tools available
• Superior experience managing people in complex environments
• Exceptional budgeting skills

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience in labor negotiations
• Experience making difficult news decisions in a fast-moving environment
