Job Description

The first Tiny Desk Concert came about in 2008 after Bob Boilen and NPR Music editor Stephen Thompson left South by Southwest frustrated that they couldn't hear the music over the crowd noise. Thompson joked that the musician, folk singer Laura Gibson, should just perform at Boilen's desk. A month later Boilen arranged for her to do just that, making an impromptu recording and posting it online.

Since those first acoustic concerts, Tiny Desk has grown to encompass almost any genre you can imagine, from hip-hop and R&B to rock en español. From the time T-Pain shocked the world in 2014 when he performed at NPR headquarters without Auto-Tune, Tiny Desk views on YouTube have grown an astounding 1400%, reaching 492 Million views in 2020 alone and 1.6 Billion over the past 12 years. The series has also developed a global fanbase, with more than 70 countries around the world surpassing 1 Million views.

The Tiny Desk Concert series has grown to become NPR's biggest digital program.
