The Managing Editor assists in helping to run the day-to -day operations of the newsroom.
• Plan and manage daily news gathering operations
• Hire, coach and supervise Assignment Editors
• Prepare, coordinate and execute daily editorial meetings
• Create and manage detailed content schedules
• Oversee proofreading procedures and edit news copy when necessary
• Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style and tone
• Resolve issues as they arise
• Analyze performance and editorial metrics across properties for quantifiable results when necessary
• Monitor and optimize performance to meet traffic, engagement and growth targets
• Implement best practices, workflows, tools and templates to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the editorial process
• Generate news stories and execute news coverage by coordinating field crews
• Works with other news management to establish and reach station goals
• Assist with the management of content compliance for digital/social platforms
• Requirements & Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
• Minimum ten years' experience in a news leadership role, or comparable experience
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously Short- and long-term news coverage planning is essential
• Manage multiple assignments in a high pressure, breaking news environment
• Strong journalistic skills and news judgement
• Willing to work extra hours on short notice
