Manager, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS)

Responsibilities

Role

The Manager, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for working with assigned feature productions to ensure compliance with all applicable company, federal, state, local, and/or international environmental, occupational safety and health policies, rules and regulations.

Essential Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities (essential functions):
• Implement and maintain appropriate safety programs, e.g., Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP, See SOP #01), policies, and procedures as necessary to ensure a safe and healthful work environment for all employees and guests of the productions.
• Establish, administer and enforce a program of safe practices and conduct for all production personnel.
• Ensure appropriate pre-lease inspections are conducted for all potential production spaces to assess and resolve any identified EHS issues (See SOP # 05).
• Conduct a review/breakdown of each script to identify potential EHS issues, e.g., special effects, stunts, unusual activities, and hazardous locations (See SOP # 02).
• Participate in each production's tech scout and production meeting, as necessary, to understand scheduled production activities and provide guidance for any unresolved issues.
• Prepare a location safety memo, as required, to inform the production of general location safety issues as well as specific location safety items.
• Establish and implement procedures for proper hazardous waste accumulation and disposal following company policies (See SOP's # 08 and #09).
• Facilitate and/or conduct EHS testing of any location that presents potential EHS hazards, e.g., testing water quality, air quality, coordinating abatement and/or encapsulation of areas/materials.
• Attend stunt rehearsals and special effects tests to provide input from the EHS perspective and be on set during the shooting of these stunts & effects, as necessary.
• Provide education & safety training to production crew, supervisors and management in safety awareness, safe work practices, documentation requirements, and general regulatory compliance, as necessary.
• Establish a safety committee on productions lasting longer than one year in duration, or when Government regulations require that a Committee be formed (See SOP # 10).
• Provide EHS equipment or instruments, when applicable, to assist in compliance of EHS laws and programs. If equipment or instruments are not available, provide contacts where equipment can be procured.
• Discuss the injury and illness paperwork process with the designated production contact and production medic(s) to ensure paperwork is completed properly (See SOP # 25).
• Conduct investigations of all accidents, incidents, significant events, and emergencies promptly in accordance with company policies and applicable laws and regulations.
• Travel to and inspect production work sites, locations, sets, warehouse space, and any other such related facilities on an ongoing basis with the intent to assess safety issues, identify and resolve safety hazards, and potential exposures.
• Track, review and analyze all injuries/illnesses and accident investigations for each production to determine trends, root cause, regulatory compliance, and follow-up actions.
• Act as a liaison on EHS issues between the production's management, crew, and NBCUniversal EHS management.
• On international productions, work with the assigned local safety professional(s), if hired, to ensure production compliance with all rules, regulations, and company polices.
• Report promptly to company management any injury or incident that triggers federal, state, and/or local reporting regulations.

Secondary Responsibilities:
• Work with VP Production Safety to realize established short and long-term departmental goals.
• Work with the VP Production Safety and other EHS Directors/Managers to ensure consistent application of company policies across all productions and evaluate whether these policies are effective.
• Actively participate in any Production Executive/EHS meetings and weekly EHS departmental meetings and be prepared to discuss issues related to your assigned shows.
• Interface with outside regulatory agencies as required, e.g., Fire Department, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) representatives.
• Participate in the ongoing review of existing, and research and creation of EHS programs, policies, procedures, guidelines and bulletins.
• Represent NBCUniversal to external professional organizations, peers and employees in a professional manner (See SOP # 06).

COVID-19 Responsibilities:
On March 13, 2020 NBCU instituted a work from home program as COVID-19 cases spread across the US and the World. One by one our film, television, and live theatrical productions shut down. As the effects of COVID-19 became apparent, the production EHS department embarked on review of all literature available from around the world and began to prepare protocols for our productions to use once we were able to resume working. As a result, numerous additional responsibilities arose.
• Work with assigned productions to ensure that policies are in place and that productions are kept informed of the most current procedures for COVID-19 safety protocols.
• Monitor up to date information on global trends and regulatory requirements for regions for assigned NBCU active and upcoming productions.
• Ensure that internal policies, procedures, training, and guidelines are communicated to productions.
• Maintain channels of communication within NBCU partners (e.g., BCCM, Corporate EHS, Legal) to stay informed of trends in COVID-19 compliance and management throughout the company.
• Review testing statistics for NBCU productions to monitor for suspected outbreaks and/or trends.
• As requested, evaluate new devices and methods for testing, PPE, and compliance management.
• Work with post production departments (e.g. scoring, editing) to ensure all groups are educated in COVID-19 procedures and that appropriate protocols are in place.
• Assist in the assessment of vendors and consultants under consideration to provide additional services to NBCU productions globally.
• Review COVID-19 procedures for production leased facilities to confirm they are aligned with NBCU policy.
• Work with production EHS Directors and Managers as well as COVID-19 Compliance Supervisors and Managers to ensure a consistent application of NBCU protocols and procedures across all production operations.

Qualifications/Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum 3 years prior experience in motion picture, television, or entertainment industry is strongly preferred
• Bachelor's degree and work experience (minimum 5 years) in environmental health and safety or closely related field
