Job Description
Responsibilities
The Assignment Editor plays a major role in the day-to-day execution of NBC Connecticut's multiplatform news strategy, working with other local staff, including reporters, photographers, digital team, and assignment editors to ensure the station's broadcast and digital content is consistently up-to-the-minute, differentiated, impactful and relevant to the local audiences. The role combines acute attention to detail, rapid response, editorial judgment, consistent day-to-day execution and project-management responsibilities within a 24/7 newsgathering operation. As an Assignment Editor you will be responsible for: conceiving and executing news coverage, managing the logistics of day-to-day assignments for the station's field crews. Provide status of coverage to producers and management. Establish a network of contacts and sources across Connecticut.
Essential Functions
• Break stories, work contacts and react quickly and aggressively to breaking news. Utilize police and emergency scanners, electronic/printed sources and social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to monitor news feeds, breaking news and potential stories.
• Enterprise story ideas and work with reporters and producers to develop stories. Conceive and execute news coverage and make front line editorial decisions on a story-by-story basis.
• Participate in daily planning meetings. Create and coordinate short-range planning to meet department editorial goals.
• Facilitate the news gathering process and ensure comprehensive coverage of all news stories.
• Dispatch crews and information in a timely and organized manner. Coordinate reporters, photographers, and other personnel to cover stories. Multi-task and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
• Coordinate with and support Telemundo colleagues, other NBC-owned television stations and Newschannel.
• Monitor journalistic and editorial elements of newsgathering in the field. Coordinate field crew daily responsibilities including live shots for newscasts and sending in elements for our digital platforms.
• Communicate with production staff about live feeds and live shots from the field.
• Coordinate with other Assignment Editors and the Managing Editor for carry-over of stories from day to day.
• Develop and cultivate contacts within the community for news stories. Establish a network of contacts and sources across Connecticut.
• Anticipate special news events and create plans for coverage.

Qualifications/Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
• Proficient in Dalet Galaxy.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
• Thorough knowledge of the logistics aspect of deploying personnel and equipment for the purpose of electronic newsgathering.
• Proficient in Social Media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Eligibility Requirements:
• Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and overnights.
• Must have the ability to work any of a 24 x 7 shift
• Must be willing to work at the station in West Hartford, CT.
• Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must be covered by Solutions, NBCU's Alternative Dispute Resolution Program
• Must submit an attestation disclosing your COVID-19 vaccination status and, if partially or fully vaccinated, submitting your vaccination record no later than 7 days following commencement of employment.
• Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the commencement of employment or must undergo regular COVID-19 testing if Company determines your job position requires accessing an NBCUniversal worksite.
• Must be willing to adhere to all Company COVID-19 workplace safety policies and protocols.

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communications.
• 1 year experience working in print, online or television news in a medium to large-sized market
• 1 year experience including: work in a broadcast news environment, coordinating assignments, generating story ideas.
• 1 year experience as an Assignment Editor.
