Job Description
Responsibilities
The Assignment Planning Editor is responsible for arranging and coordinating news content for our Telemundo51 /NBC6 duopoly. This position will report to the Assignment Manager.

Responsibilities
• Help plan daily and long-term coverage
• Propose coverage strategy with at least one week in advance of daily news coverage
• Gather story ideas from reporters, producers, and other sources
• Read school, county and city Government agendas for story ideas
• Organize follow-up story ideas and pitch during editorial meetings
• Add and update stories in planning calendar and alert management team as appropriate about action needed
• Monitor websites and social media sources for stories
• Check clerk of courts sites regularly for upcoming trials and hearings
• Arrange and coordinate news content and interviews for producers, reporters, newscasts and other news programs.
• Coordinate elements and assist reporters, producers and MMJs.
• Request credentials for staff to cover important events
• Request and track public records on big, ongoing stories
• Collaborate with producers and crew to establish live shots location, and other news content as needed
• Work with special project to manage HFR calendar to ensure appropriate staffing is available
• Work closely with producers and news managers on story/sweeps planning and coordination
• Work at the assignment desk and play a supporting role for breaking news
• Monitors police radios for possible news stories and news sources
• Answer and respond to phone calls, emails, mail, and other communication methods
• Update and assist in providing content to all station's digital news platforms
• Must be willing to work weekends, long hours and a variety of shifts, when necessary

Qualifications/Requirements

At least 3 years experience as an Assignment Editor.
Willingness to travel and work overtime, and on short notice.
Must be willing to work in the Miramar office.
Must be willing to submit to a background investigation.
Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
Must be 18 years or older.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Must be covered by Solutions, NBCU's Alternative Dispute Resolution Program

Desired Characteristics
• Ability to react quickly and urgently to breaking news
• Prior experience at an assignment desk.
• Experience in local news coverage
• Preferred fluent in Spanish/English (speak, read & write).
• Strong resources and contacts in the community
• Experience with databases and computer assisted research
• Solid news judgment and awareness of local and national news.
• Ability to solve problems, prioritize decisions and act decisively under stress and tight deadlines.
• Strong ability to assign, direct and supervise broadcast news coverage.
• Strong research skills.
• Requires adaptability, enthusiasm, initiative and a positive approach to problem solving
• Must be familiar with newsroom computer systems, (i.e., iNews, ENPS, Dalet, et at)
• Ability to work under extreme pressure and deadlines.
• Ability to establish community and news contacts
• Operational knowledge of computer newsroom systems and Internet.
• Great phone etiquette, organizational skills, news judgment
