Responsibilities

We're seeking an experienced reporter to help cover health and medical news at NBC News. This is a temporary assignment for six months, with the possibility of becoming full time. We are open to the geographic location of this position.

You'll be reporting and writing digital stories as part of the award-winning Health and Medical Unit of NBC News. You'll be able to explore and analyze a variety of urgent health issues that demand the attention of a national audience, including – but not limited to – Covid-19, vaccine effectiveness, infectious diseases, health disparities, drug addiction, mental health and the health fallout of climate change.

The right candidate has sharp writing skills and can interpret complex medical research and discoveries accurately in an engaging way, providing concise takeaways for the NBC News audience across all platforms. Your intense curiosity will uncover the health care challenges Americans are facing as we emerge from a devastating pandemic. This candidate can land scoops and turn exclusive interviews with leading research institutions and medical centers into news-breaking stories.

We are looking for a reporter with empathy who can find the untold stories of real people grappling with health problems, along with the doctors and scientists who are seeking solutions.

The reporter can pivot from short-term and longer-term features to covering the health news of the day, as well as breaking news from federal health agencies.

You'll collaborate with broadcast producers on news of the day stories and larger projects.
Other responsibilities may include:
• Monitoring and reporting on studies under embargo
• Writing compelling headlines and photo captions
• Working with NBC News data team to develop meaningful stories

Qualifications/Requirements
Minimum requirements are:
• At least five years of experience reporting on health and medical news
• Strong, accurate and authoritative writing skills
• Familiarity and comfort with using social media
• Must be willing to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking news
