What You'll Do

The Department Manager (DM) collaborates with their creative counterpart/s – the Head of Department – to oversee the Artist teams and drive the long-term success of one or more departments; responsible for departmental financials, performance analysis and issue resolution. The DM partners with the Talent Team and their senior team to effectively manage their department's career development, training and mentorship. • Partnering with the Talent Team in effectively managing their team's performance management
• Manage succession planning and facilitate career progression for the team
• Lead creative mentorship program for the department, ensuring mentors are accountable and mentees are engaging
• Mentor and coach the team to promote career growth and development within the team
• Brief the Leads and support them with on-the-floor development of the Artists
• Drive continuous feedback in the department and plan goals and objectives

The DM is the overall people manager for the department; responsible for a variety of activities ranging from overall department labour spend, day-to-day resourcing, employee engagement and managing and guiding artists and employees within their department. Collaborate with Talent and act as the main communicator for key employment manners.
• Acts as the Hiring Manager for the department
• Responsible for local employee welfare management including hours management, time off and well being
• Managing hiring requests in line with show demand, overseeing recruitment activities for the department and conducting interviews
• Manage contract extensions and crew changes
• Responsible for the Department Salary Spreadsheet (DSS) and working with Talent and HOS to manage salary levels including planning and balancing promotion spend in line with external hiring
• Manage and report on department OT and TOIL requests with HOD and Talent, ensuring that work is distributed across the team and that hours are managed appropriately

The DM works closely with the show teams to ensure the department is contributing to the timely and efficient completion of shows and is fostering an effective working department.
• Oversee the management of new starters in the department, ensuring a positive experience into the studio and team, including ensuring they have the necessary kit and department onboarding
• Monitor department reporting and remediate issues to drive show deliverables and quotas within the team to ensure our projects are on target
• Responsible for Department Compliance Reporting and monthly checklists with HCO
• Lead Departmental planning and strategy meetings by presenting, departmental, local studio and global (where relevant) information
• Work with the HOD to assign individuals to shows and ensure that team dynamics are effective

• Work with the HOS to adopt, embed and roll-out company initiatives within the department

• Ensures that the department team understands and adheres to the MPC policies and processes
• Be an advocate of diversity and inclusivity
• Act as an ambassador to promote MPC within the local film community
• Support MPC's external positioning by actively sharing social post

Qualifications

Skills and Qualifications
• Strong working knowledge of MS Office
• Strong project management skills and a sensitivity towards deadline related deliveries
• Adept in managing large teams
• Experience in managing budgets and keeping to financial targets
• Organisational skills – personal efficiency, time management skills and the ability to prioritise competing demands are key
• Communication skills – ability to lead a team, managing diverse personalities and viewpoints; the ability to build relationships and collaborate with others is vital
• Commercial acumen – strategic decision-making within the business as an influencer. Being able to understand company finances, resourcing and the ultimate aims of the business is important
• Role modelling – demonstrate and lead on the values, initiatives and culture of an organisation
• Professional expertise – A strong working knowledge of employment law issues, best practice processes, as well as experience of employee relations and ideally in UK immigration
• Coaching and mentoring – Whether senior leaders, junior colleagues or middle management, you will be proficient in developing skills in your talent
• Trust – a trusted confidante on talent issues, unafraid of giving your opinions and expertise
• Detail orientated, highly motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment with challenging deadlines

Any of the following technical skills is a bonus:
• Previous experience using scheduling tools e.g. Shotgun

Any of the following experience is an advantage:
• Experience in customer service
• Knowledge of the visual effects industry
• Previous experience in project management
• Previous experience working with employment law issues, best practices and employee relations
