Superviseur 2D (VFX) / 2D Supervisor

Working closely with the VFX Supervisor, the 2D Compositing Supervisor is responsible for identifying potential strategies, assessing technical options and evaluating production schedules. The Compositing Supervisor participates as a leader and hands-on contributor through all stages of 2D Pre and Post Production.

Every shot that leaves the compositing department will first be scrutinized and approved by the Compositing Supervisor. He/she will have proven ability to handle the pressure of delivering a myriad of shots to a strict deadline, foreseeing and pre-empting any problems along the way.

Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities:
• Work with the VFX Supervisor, Leads and the Head of Compositing to define the creative and technical approach for the show
• Identify areas of R&D required for the show
• Work with Production to manage the day to day running of the team
• Work with Production to evaluate artist schedules ensuring they are realistic and achievable
• Attend desk rounds with all members of the team on a regular basis
• Attend dailies sessions with the team to give feedback/approvals
• Meet with the Leads on the show on a regular basis to identify inefficiencies or technical problems with the toolset and pipeline, and put in place a plan of action to resolve such issues

Pre-Production:
• Help bid on the compositing component of shows
• Set supervision assistance, as necessary
• In conjunction with the imaging department, help set up the colour pipeline for the show
• In conjunction with editorial, set up a job specifics for daily creation and client delivery standards In conjunction with software and comp support, ensure that there is an appropriate job specific set up for Nuke, where all job specific gizmos are available to the comper starting Nuke from a job shell
• Define and split comp work into sequences
• In conjunction with Comp Manager and Show Producer, define the number of compositors needed to work on each project and pick the number of leads to assist
• In conjunction with CG Supervisor, develop the look and technical setup for each sequence, this will involve
• Picking shader flavour
• Determining how much overscan needed in 3D elements
• Delineating which parts of sequences will be 2d and which 3D
• Outline and specify new software requirements
• Specify 2D elements that need to be shot
• Collect reference material
• Create wiki page to define Comp specific standards for each show

Shot production:
• In conjunction with comp manager and leads, assign shots to appropriate compositor according to ability and sequence delineation
• Create or supervise the creation of key shots
• Organize the creation of template scripts for each sequence
• Set neutral, final and temp grades for each sequence
• Manage comp dailies session/rounds schedule
• Arrange regular daily catchups with VFX Supervisor and make sure responsibilities of supervision are established, and the comp specific feedback is clear and precise
• In conjunction with leads and seniors, offer technical support and advice on difficult scripts/look-dev where needed
• Check released shots in the cut and ensure continuity and consistency
• Optimize workflow and identify bottlenecks or problems
• Backup show coordinators by helping to chase elements from other departments
• Communicate shot information to production to allow schedule updates and additional work
• Be aware of show morale on comp floor, advising production if there are any problems arising

Post Show Production:
• In conjunction with VFX Supervisor, identify and organize creation of showreel material (breakdowns)
• In conjunction with leads and HoD, participate in Post Mortem to identify problems that occurred on show and offer solutions
• Assess team members, giving comp HoD and HR feedback on performance
• In conjunction with HoD, highlight any show specific library elements which need to be transferred to the Global Library
