KOIN 6 TV/Portland's CW, a Nexstar Media Group Inc. owned CBS and CW duopoly in Portland, Oregon is searching for a credible, experienced, and engaging news anchor with on-air commercial television experience for the Evening and Late News. Must be aggressive and able to contribute to daily story ideas, gather, write, and edit reports for newscasts and koin.com. Must have dynamic on-camera communication skills. We want a high energy, engaging talent who is a strong storyteller and can handle breaking news situations in a fast-paced environment. We believe anchors must be positive, newsroom leaders. KOIN anchors must be active in the community and must be aggressive on digital and social media. If you just want to read the news, this is not the job for you.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
• Presents news stories and other content for all platforms
• Ensures that all news content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
• Writes and delivers news stories in a clear and concise manner
• Responds to breaking news and other urgent newsrooms situations as required
• Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites
• Reports and produces a regular on-air franchise
• Participates in promotional activities including public appearances
• Performs special projects and other duties as assigned
Specialized Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required
• Minimum three years' experience as an anchor
• Superior on-air presence
• Excellent news judgment with an expansive knowledge of local and national current events, history, newsmakers and issues
• Demonstrate editorial judgment using knowledge of journalism ethics and libel laws.
• Experience leading, directing and motivating others.
• Ability to identify the developmental needs of others and to coach, mentor or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge or skills.
• Strong on-air reporting, writing, and technical skills
• Skilled in conflict management
• Detail oriented
• Must be able to accept constructive direction and criticism designed to enhance individual's performance
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree Journalism required (equivalent years of experience may substitute for education) + four years of experience as a multi-platform journalist. Three years of regular anchor experience required.
Training/Equipment: Newsroom computer systems. Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and other office equipment.
Work Environment/Mental/Physical Requirements: High stress environment with deadline pressures and the demands of breaking news, which can happen at any time. Position will require day-to-day multi-tasking, as well as managing multiple projects simultaneously with frequent change in direction and priority. Travel may be required. A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. Must be willing and able to work any and all shifts as necessary, including nights, overnights, early morning, days, weekends, and holidays.
Must be able to sit, conduct phone conversations, use email, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work near others, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
