Job Description
KCCI-TV, Iowa's News Leader, seeks an Assistant News Director. The Assistant News Director will oversee all day-to-day news operations across dayparts. The successful candidate will lead breaking news and severe weather coverage, as well as plan and execute specials projects. The Assistant News Director will provide ongoing feedback to news employees and complete performance reviews. This position will also help recruit, hire and train new employees. The ideal candidate will have the right mix of journalistic passion, vision, leadership, creativity and organizational skills. In-person attendance is required.
Job Responsibilities
• Oversees all day-to-day operations in newsroom
• Monitors all editorial content, on-air and online, ensuring journalistic integrity, balance and fairness
• Works with the News Director to set strategic vision
• Uses strategic vision to develop and implement tactics regarding editorial content, newsroom systems and production decisions
• Guarantees KCCI owns breaking news, weather and big story coverage
• Ensures KCCI newscasts are impactful, interesting and an experience to watch when major news is not happening
• Coaches news skills and competencies
• Reviews scripts, newscasts and digital platforms for editorial, legal and brand alignment
• Recognizes opportunities for news coverage and strategic advantages
• Alerts News Director to problems with operations and personnel, and works with News Director on solutions
• Develops and implements plans for Targeted Special Reports, Investigative reports and coverage of big events
• Understand and implements meter and rating strategies
• Supports corporate and station initiatives, coordinating large events that involve multiple station departments
• Builds rapport and communication between news work groups and other station departments
• Recruits, hires and trains newsroom employees
• Conducts annual reviews for reporters and other employees as needed
• Completes additional special projects as needed
Qualifications Requirements
• Individual must have a passion for news
• Strong communication and people skills to manage a large staff and multiple hours of daily newscasts
• Self-starter: must be able to take on a project on initiative and see it through to execution with little supervision
• Able to work a variety of shifts and available for news coverage outside of business hours
Experience Requirements
• Minimum of 3-5 years news management experience with a track record of both innovation and success
• Strong producing background preferred
• Experience dealing with the stress and pressure of time-sensitive newscast production
Education
• Bachelor's Degree or related military training in Broadcast Communications, Journalism, or related field.
