Job Title: Assistant Director-Behavioral Science

Job Summary: The Kansas City Royals Baseball Club is seeking a highly motivated and skilled licensed eligible psychologist, professional counselor, or clinical social worker to work with elite baseball players. The ideal applicant will have strong interpersonal skills, acumen, intellectual curiosity, and working knowledge and experience of applying evidenced-based methodology for improving mental performance on and off of the field of play. The applicant also must have experience in program development, program evaluation, and experience working with multidisciplinary teams. In addition, the applicant must be a team player and able to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.

Position Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
• Oversee the programming, development, and implementation of psychological interventions throughout player development.
• Assist with implementation of mental skills curriculum throughout player development.
• Individual mental performance work with players and staff within player development.
• Provide oversight of return-to-play psychological protocol of professional baseball players who are participating in physical rehabilitation.
• Design and implement program evaluation metrics for mental performance and player development initiatives.
• Consultation with sports medicine team, performance science, sports nutrition, research and development, coaching staff, and front office staff members.
• In conjunction with the Behavioral Science Coordinator and medical department, manage/coordinate Therapeutic Use Evaluations (TUE) for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
• Foster, develop, and maintain relationships of mental health assets in cities where Kansas City Royals affiliates (i.e., Columbia, SC, Quad Cities, IA, Springdale, AR, and Omaha, NE) are located.
• Ability to improve access to mental healthcare, provide appropriate referrals, and monitor treatment adherence for mental health related concerns.
• Ability to provide supervision of graduate students on an as needed basis.

Position Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required:
• Master's or Doctorate in psychology, counseling, or social work.
• License eligible in the state of Arizona within one year of hire
• Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working in sport (preferably baseball) or related field.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact and work with staff at all levels with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
• Proficiency with SPSS and Excel.
• Advanced oral and written skills.
• Frequent travel.
• Able to travel and work extended hours, weekends, and holidays when required.
• Ability to understand and work with diverse communities and populations.
• Ability to develop working knowledge of Major League Baseball (MLB) rules and regulations.
• Ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment.
• Willingness to relocate to Surprise (Greater Phoenix area), AZ.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift items weighing as much as 15 pounds
• Must be able to work in a seated position for majority of workday
• Must be able to be productive utilizing a computer keyboard and telephone
• Must be able to be productive in a work environment where the noise level can be high at times
• Specific vision abilities include close vision and ability to adjust focus
• Must be comfortable walking to navigate the facility to access the office, concourse, etc.
• Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends as required by deadlines and event scheduling
