Job Description

Media Engineering builds the software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best possible playback experience to our viewers.

Media Engineering handles audio, video, & metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.

SUMMARY

Disney Streaming Media Engineering is seeking an experienced executive and architect to lead and coordinate our technical efforts. As the head of architecture for media engineering, you will guide hundreds of engineers in their design and technical strategy at a critical time as we shape the media platform to power the next phase of Disney's growth in the streaming market. You'll have the opportunity to influence major streaming standards and the larger industry, presenting an exciting challenge and influential opportunity for the right individual!

WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Lead design of our Media Platform, powering products including Hulu, Disney+, Star+, and ESPN+
• Partner with development, product, program, operations, architecture and others in a matrix structure
• Be an ambassador for media to teams across Disney as well as external technical communities and standards bodies
• Influence development of innovations that improve quality of experience for our viewers, and improve scale for our systems and operations.
• Work with the architect and dev communities across other teams in Disney Streaming Tech to coordinate and promote best-practice methodologies, guidelines, procedures and repeatable and scalable frameworks.
• Provide guidance and mentor the technical and business teams by providing solutions, recommendations and documentation of use cases for continuous improvement.
• Follow incidents with the team, deriving insights for resiliency and self-healing capabilities into future iterations

WHAT TO BRING
• BA/BS degree in technical field or equivalent experience
• At least 15 years experience in software development
• Skills collaborating with multiple distributed teams to build alignment and find common paths forward
• Experience designing and developing backend services and systems
• Experience with media player stacks in one or more environments
• Experience with networking and media protocols, including TCP/IP, HTTP/2, QUIC, DASH, HLS, and ABR playback logic
• A mind for optimization. At this scale, small improvements can drastically effect quality for thousands of viewers, or make significant cost impacts.
• Strong interpersonal, administrative, presentation and analytical skills
• Clear communication, collaborative teamwork skills, and ability to build consensus with multiple stakeholders
• A broad, enterprise-wide view of the business and varying degrees of appreciation for strategy, processes & capabilities, and governance

NICE-TO-HAVES
• Experience managing external vendor relationships
• Advanced knowledge of content delivery across the public internet
• Experience with video technologies, including ingest, transcoding, packaging, DRM, metadata, and SCTE, EIDR, or other industry standards
• Experience building distributed systems for serious scale and reliability, preferably in hybrid cloud / private datacenter scenarios
• Experience working with finance and data teams to identify insights to guide our strategy, execution, and operations.
• Passionate about public speaking; this role could present phenomenal opportunities to get our message out to the community!
