Job Description
Impact

At Hearst Magazines Digital Media you will join a diverse, supportive community of creatives building new experiences in digital media. You will have the opportunity to work with an end-to-end product design team that includes visual design, user experience, user research, prototyping, and presentation/interaction coding for our proprietary media platform. Our designers contribute to an end-to-end design process that allows them to understand and own their work. You will work with diverse editorial brands such as ELLE, Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Women's Health, Runner's World, Esquire, House Beautiful, and more.

We are the product design team that creates the content management system that powers all of Hearst Magazines' websites. We also create and maintain the technology platform that powers that CMS and a number of B2B services. We are in the midst of scaling our design team from 13 to 25 people and building out specialized teams: Storytelling, Commerce, Design System and Ops, End-to-End Product Design, and Tools.

We have a rich history of enabling content creators to tell stories containing text, images, video, and other multimedia elements. Increasingly, we have added commerce functionality into our digital toolkit, allowing our expert storytellers to embed shoppable products into the content they create, enabling high-quality product reviews and other commerce-focused content. This commerce functionality has become central to our business and will be a key part of our growth moving forward.

We are looking for a Product Designer with a focus on commerce to help us continue building features on our websites that allow content creators to embed shoppable experiences into the content they create, as well as help us discover, design, launch, and validate new and innovative ways to combine commerce and content in ways that are performant, accessible, and delightful.

Responsibilities

Support existing commerce functionality:
• You will work with our Product and Design teams to understand how readers interact with our content in a commerce context
• You will propose and design improvements to our existing commerce functionality designed to increase customer satisfaction and engagement
• You will work closely with the Editorial teams using our proprietary CMS to better understand their workflow and find ways to improve the process of embedding products into their content

Build new functionality:
• You will work with our Product and Design teams to understand user behavior around online shopping, and craft experiences that better serve our readers and help grow our business

Be our champion for user-centered design in a commerce environment:
• As a product designer with a commerce background, you will help the rest of our design team understand effective and ineffective design approaches
• You will attend meetings with Product and Engineering teams and advocate for modern best-practices in commerce-focused product design
• You will have a strong understanding of accessibility and the importance of inclusive design

Collaborate with Sales on new e-commerce websites:
• You will work closely with our Sales department, currently building a suite of e-commerce shops for a select few of our brands and the Hearst Fashion & Luxury Collection
• You will be able to consult on and possibly design user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups for these e-commerce shops
• You will be able to consult on best-practices and provide guidance to external teams working on these e-commerce shops

Qualifications
• You have a design portfolio that demonstrates problem solving in an e-commerce environment
• You have designed products that have been launched and iterated upon in a real-world e-commerce environment
• You have experience working with data and using it to inform your work
• You have experience collaborating with other designers to improve upon your work
• You have knowledge of accessibility standards (Section 508 Refresh/WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA)-and/or an interest to learn more
• Nice to have: Experience with HTML/CSS/JS
