Remote / Virtual
Your impact:
The Hearst Consumer Products team is looking for a copy & research editor to serve as the team's lead proofreader and fact-checker for the cookbooks, planners, calendars, health/fitness guides, and other editorial products created in conjunction with Hearst Magazines' portfolio of brands. The ideal candidate is a multitasker who can pivot between brand styles/voices while also applying general grammar, spelling, and syntax rules. Must have an eye for consistency and details. Will work collaboratively with editors and designers to ensure all final products are clean. This role is based in our Easton, PA, office; we will not be able to consider remote candidates. Please note: For consideration, resumes must be submitted in PDF format with salary requirements and a cover letter that includes the style guides you have used.
What you'll do:
• Work on a fast-paced team that produces 20+ physical and digital products annually on a wide range of topics, spanning everything from the Low-FODMAP diet to air-fryer recipes
• Copy-edit and proofread all Hearst Product Studio products, from initial manuscript to printer-ready files
• Correct manuscripts for grammar, spelling, syntax, and house style
• Fact-check manuscripts (especially those for cookbooks and health/fitness guides) to ensure all information is factual and up to date
• Close-read manuscripts for small but critical details, like missing recipe ingredients, repetitive information, and consistent heds
• Review printer-ready files and multiple passes of the product to ensure accuracy of all elements, including pagination, folios, table of contents, photo captions, photo credits, copyright information, consistent formatting of repeating design elements, and more
• Proofread marketing materials as needed (emails, store page descriptions, etc.)
• Maintain high quality work throughout all phases of a project
Who you are:
• You have two to three years of prior professional experience as a copy editor at a major publication, print or digital
• You have a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field
• You have knowledge of Google Docs, Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Dropbox as tools for commenting on files
• You are able to work in project management tools such as Asana
• You have working knowledge of Chicago and AP styles
• You have a sense of when to check the brand's style guide (serial commas, ''carb'' vs. ''carbohydrate,'' space around em dashes vs. no space)
• You can adapt to evolving timelines and last-minute asks with a positive attitude
• You do everything possible to ensure every product goes to the printer error-free
• You understand the importance of protecting each brand's voice and where grammatical rules can bend
• Your attention to detail and quality assurance is precise and meticulous
• You are excited to adopt new ways of working to help create a more efficient process
