Job Description
The Director, Research Science will lead quantitative and statistical modeling, machine learning and AI research for a broad range of applied science initiatives for HBO Max. This role will be focused on discovering new research problems, developing novel models and algorithms, designing experiments, and defining the success metrics to advance personalization and recommendation, audience intelligence, and content science and AI solutions for HBO Max. The Director will partner closely with business and engineering stakeholders to identify modeling, ML and AI opportunities and to drive continuous research innovation.
The Daily
• Develop thought leadership and vision for ML and AI research and quantitative methods, build long-term goals and success metrics to drive adoption of research solutions.
• Deliver strategic and novel science and engineering approaches that help optimize decisions and improve outcomes.
• Build ML/AI life cycle from prototyping to deployment and experimentation to drive continuous improvement.
• Bring deep research and industry knowledge to challenge existing assumptions and introduce new machine learning models, algorithms and training workflows.
• Lead by example by emphasizing collaborative and inclusive teamwork fostering a culture of ownership, experimentation, and innovation.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to other scientists and machine learning engineers for their career development and growth.
• Represent HBO Max at tech events and scientific conferences; contribute to the research community through academic publications, tech blogs, open-source code.
The Essentials
• PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Research, or other equivalent quantitative fields
• 7+ years of work experience in Machine Learning, AI and Data Science with a proven track record to drive innovation and business impacts
• Strong machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling expertise, such as causal inference modeling, ensembles, neural networks, reinforcement learning, NLP, and computer vision
• Advanced knowledge of SQL and experience with big data platform (AWS, Snowflake, Spark, Google Cloud etc.)
• Proficiency in machine learning and deep learning languages and platforms (Python, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, MXNet etc.)
• Experience in deploying machine learning algorithms and advanced modeling solutions at scale
• Track record of publications and contributions in premier journals and conferences and to the machine learning community at large
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with technical and business stakeholders; ability to explain complex analysis and algorithms to untechnical audience and to influence important decisions
• Works effectively cross functional teams to build trusted partnership
