Disney Streaming encompasses the teams leading the Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Star+ streaming applications and services within the Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution group. Disney Streaming's Client Application Software Engineering team is seeking a VP, Software Engineering to lead the client engineering multi-functional team (known as FEDX). The client engineering team builds Disney+, Hulu, Star+, and ESPN+ for iOS (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Apple Watch) and Android (phones, tablets, Android TV, AOSP, and Amazon FireTV and Fire Tablet). The multi-functional FEDX team supports client engineering with:
Client SDK development to enable access to all of Disney Streaming's backend services. The client SDK supports many platforms and program languages including JavaScript, Rust, Swift, Kotlin, C#, and Roku BrightScript.
Solutions Architecture team which is responsible for representing client engineering in early technical architecture and brainstorming to solve sophisticated problems at scale across all of the client applications.
Research and Development to accelerate technical discovery and innovation to increase the adoption of new and emerging technologies that impact client
applications. This also creates a pipeline to the Disney Streaming Advanced Research team.
Design Engineering which is at the intersection of Engineering, Design and Product in order to create the foundation that will accelerate the creation of client features. Close relationships with Design and Product teams in addition to the FED client teams will enable us to build the design systems foundation for clients, provide Discovery phase feedback, and rapidly develop native prototypes.
Release Integrity which is responsible for defining and building the systems and tools that facilitate the release lifecycle. This includes delivering our applications to production and providing the mechanisms to run and monitor them once they're live.
Ecosystem Reliability Engineering which proactively identifies and triage issues and anomalies, drive initiatives to improve visibility and increase reliability, decrease acceptable error margin, reduce risk of launches, feature releases, and geo expansions.
The right person for this role will be a hands-on technical executive who has experience designing and shipping mobile and 10-foot experiences at global scale with hundreds of millions of users. Responsibilities:
• Strategic and tactical hands on technology executive role leading the design, development, and evolution of large scale streaming media applications.
• Ability to lead a multi-functional software engineering team specializing in client software development on a number of platforms including iOS, Android, Roku, Amazon Fire, game consoles, smart TVs, and web.
• Lead and mentor a team of Directors, Engineering Managers, and Individual Contributors with a proficiency in client platforms
• Identify areas for growth within the team processes and develop new systems for collaboration
• Mentor team to improve technical ability and build relationships within and outside the organization
• Work with Technical Project Managers to drive development schedules based on product roadmaps
• Ability to present technical decisions and risks to senior leadership
Basic Qualifications:
• Experience integrating with backend systems, web services, and third-party software
• Growth mindset towards learning, experience mentoring, and a desire to give and receive feedback
• Experience leading a team, including delegating responsibility and balancing high-reaching priorities
• Experience composing and presenting thoughtful and implementable solutions to a variety of collaborators (technical and non-technical)
• 10+ years of experience shipping global client applications at scale
• Familiarity with video streaming technologies including HLS, PlayReady DRM, VOD, Event, and Live Linear content
• Strong understanding of multi-tier architectures, and OO design patterns and concepts.
• Must demonstrate organization and communication skills.
• BS Computer Science or related technical field or its equivalent
