Overview
As a key contributor to the Discovery Revenue Accounting team you will report into our Revenue Manager supporting the revenue accounting function in Discovery EMEA.
The Revenue Accounting Team is responsible for all aspects of revenue accounting for the whole EMEA including standard and non-standard deals at Discovery. The goal is to provide revenue accounting services in an effective, holistic, and compliant way to meet the needs of our stakeholders including global Discovery Management and external Discovery stakeholders.
In this role, you need to have a strong understanding of IFRS and US GAAP and apply it consistently to assure correct revenue recognition processes. You will be responsible for End-to-End process covering contract interpretation and analysis, its implications, preparation and review of corresponding adjustments to assure accuracy in revenue recognition. You will be as well a key stakeholder in documenting and improving processes, driving efficiencies and enhancing the control over designated areas of the business.
Responsibilities
• Act as a key contributor in ensuring the high quality and efficiency of processes within revenue accounting/controlling area.
• Review revenue related contracts as needed to determine proper revenue recognition in accordance with applicable regulations and company policies.
• Provide clear direction of revenue recognition implications of the new and/or non-standard deal terms supported by documented analysis.
• Apply IFRS/US GAAP revenue recognition knowledge and coordinate independent technical accounting research and document conclusions, apply the adjustments arising from the guidance.
• Monitor day-to-day, month and quarter end close activities (revenue assurance, account reconciliation, analysis and reporting) to ensure revenue is properly and accurately recorded for the period.
• Play key role in setting up the additional layer of billing review process
• Prepare/Review monthly journal entries. This will include recording of revenue, contra revenue, deferred revenue, bad debt reserves, transactions in multiple currencies and complex billing, accounting, and reporting issues.
• Perform and review revenue related balance sheet account reconciliations.
• Drive and manage improvements and develop automation of daily/monthly standard tasks in revenue (accounting/controlling) processes and workflows.
• Assist with the continuous review of revenue systems and business processes related to SAP and associated revenue systems.
• Prepare/review management reports, SEC schedules including applicable revenue-related analyses and metrics.
• Review all SOX and financial compliance processes for revenue accounting.
• Assist internal and external audit in their audit evaluation processes as requested to ensure the correctness and completeness within agreed timeline.
• Lead cross department meetings, prepare agendas, schedule meetings, document and track action items. Escalate issues as appropriate. Own issues and drive issue resolution.
• Work effectively with the billing, collections, FP&A and local business/sales team. Help create a culture of open communication and information transparency.
Qualifications
• MS/MA in Accounting or Finance and at least 5 - 10 years of revenue accounting experience as manager or team lead in international environment.
• BIG4 experience is considered an advantage.
• ACCA, CPA or CIMA qualification or part-qualification is considered as a strong advantage.
• Understanding of IFRS and/or US GAAP with focus on revenue recognition and bad debt provision standards is a must.
• End2End process understanding together with ability to drive improvements.
• Strong problem-solving skills is a must.
• Experience with large ERP system (SAP preferred).
• Proficiency in MS Excel and PC skills.
• Very good written and spoken English is a must, including excellent communication skills.
• Presentation skills, status reporting, issue flagging, public speaking and exposition of prepared analysis and its implications.
• Results oriented, strong attention to details, accuracy, timeliness as well as strong organizational skills is a must.
• Ability to work under conditions of pressure and adjust to urgent situations.
• Ability to work independently as well as working collaboratively with team members across the organization and prioritize multiple deliverables with competing deadlines.
• Proven ability to assess new challenges, identify areas for improvements, articulate action plans to management and follow through to implementation.
• Team player with strong interpersonal skills, able to work well with others and positively influence the environment to achieve goals.
• Knowledge of the media / entertainment industry is considered an advantage.
