Overview

Newshub is looking for an Executive Producer to lead the production of its award-winning flagship bulletin Newshub Live at 6pm.

This role is a rare opportunity for an experienced senior producer to make their mark on New Zealand's media landscape, leading a team of the best news producers in the country.

The successful candidate will have excellent news judgement, a proven track record of delivering on TV audience strategy and razor-sharp attention to detail.

Responsibilities
• Lead the production of Newshub: Live at 6pm working towards clear strategic goals
• Play a key role in the development of the Newshub Live at 6pm growth strategy alongside the Director, TV Bulletins and Senior Director, News.
• Articulate strategy to 6pm production team and ensure it is being executed 7 days a week.
• Intimately understand the audience profile for Newshub Live at 6pm and ensure the programme is tailored to both serve and build the audience.
• Be part of a daily debrief about audience ratings and be able to provide insight and critically assess decision making.
• An ability to understand opportunities to build audience at 6pm across different Newshub platforms and programmes
• Manage the Supervising Producer, Story Producer and other producers as required to ensure a smooth delivery of Newshub Live at 6pm.
• FIll in for Head of TV Bulletins if required
• Ensure all stories are editorially and legally sound, and BSA-compliant.
• Ensure Director of News and legal counsel are involved in decision making on legally fraught stories
• Be involved in story selection and assignment at the 8:30 editorial meeting
• Engage with wider newsroom to identify stories other programmes may have that 6pm could build on.
• Play a role in weekly planning meetings to discuss roll out and treatment of different news stories
• Assign stories to producers to ensure each reporter is aware about who their point of contact on the production desk is
• Assign and check the writing and cutting of Openers, Playoffs and Top Stories to ensure they are enticing and interesting.
• Build and work on the bulletin rundown through the day
• Identify potential live opportunities
• Think creatively about the delivery of the bulletin, continually striving for innovation and fresh ideas using all available production elements
• Identify new opportunities for Newshub Live at 6pm to innovate
• Output bulletins in the control, as required
• Lead the production of breaking news specials.
• Sub reporter scripts
• Give reporters direction and constructive suggestions
• Provide feedback to producers and reporters to help them develop their craft
• Identify and source potential story ideas
• Be an avid consumer of news
• Maintain an excellent relationship with key personnel both within the newsroom and in the broader Discovery ANZ team
• Cut and publish vision for promos/playoffs etc as required
• The Employee shall ensure they are familiar with the Employer's health and safety policies and procedures, and any modifications to those policies and procedures that may be introduced from time to time.

Qualifications
• Tertiary level qualification or equivalent industry experience of 10+ years
• A proven record of success in producing television bulletins
• Experience successfully managing a team
• Ability to develop and execute an audience strategy
• A broad awareness of challenges facing the media industry
• Strong organisational skills
• Excellent editorial nous
• Knowledge of New Zealand news and current affairs
• Excellent knowledge of laws governing defamation, libel and other applicable legal issues
• Excellent knowledge of Broadcasting Standards Authority rules and guidelines
• An enthusiastic and positive team player who loves news
• Willing to take direction and also to encourage and advise less experienced journalists
