Job Description
Purpose of the Role
The Supervising Engineer, Asia Pacific provides leadership for the Hong Kong-based Engineering Team and technical partnership for CNN's newsgathering and production operations throughout Asia pacific. As the engineer-in-charge for the region, the Supervisor will be responsible for the day to day running of the department, prioritising & fulfilling work requirements and delivering technical solutions for the business.
This is a multi-faceted role in a deadline-led news environment with business, broadcast, IT, editorial and newsgathering clients who expect high standards of performance and productivity.
The Supervising Engineer shall pursue a path of continuous improvement, evolution, innovation and collaboration with colleagues & vendors both locally & abroad. As such great communication and liaison skills are essential, along with a clear commitment to fostering diversity, inclusive practices and cooperation across our global skill base.
As team leader, you will also be responsible for service excellence, professional behaviour and a positive work environment for the team. Team member annual performance reviews will also be conducted by the Supervisor with support from the management team.
Areas of Responsibility
• Day-to-day leadership and responsibility for the smooth running of the Hong Kong Engineering Department.
• Provide key technical partnership to management, editorial, operational, newsgathering and engineering teams across WarnerMedia.Provide tailored technical advice and written reports in person, via telephone or via digital media as required.
• Judicious application and administration of the regional engineering operating budgets.
• Technical oversight, operational readiness and responsibility for:
• Hong Kong Production Centre Broadcast Systems, Studios and Production Workflows.
• Production IT Systems and Workplace Tools
• APAC regional CNN Bureaus.
• Field Engineering deployments for Breaking News, Special Events and Projects.
• Actively collaborate with other WarnerMedia teams to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our operations.
• Assistance with professional development of the engineering team
Areas of Accountability
The successful candidate will lead and be responsible for the Hong Kong Engineering team which is currently 4 staff.
This position will deal with all technical matters for CNN across the Asia Pacific region and requires management of a variable annual operating budget.
ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE
What do we need from you?
Essential
• 5 to 10 years' experience in a Television News Engineering environment involving Studio and/or ENG production techniques, terrestrial and satellite communications systems, computers and data networks.
• Previously having been the Lead Engineer in a department or EIC for projects/production events with demonstrated organizational skills & ability to prioritize, multi-task and direct others in potentially demanding situations.
• Flexible, enthusiastic, inquisitive and creative ability to architect and deliver technical solutions in a timely manner.
• 'All round' Engineering skills with in-depth knowledge of television systems, equipment, production workflows, technical jargon and circuit diagrams.
• Working knowledge of cybersecurity, digital security and data security best practices.
• A global citizen with an appreciation of cultural diversity and inclusive working practices.
• Good team player with excellent personal communication skills.
• Experience of training and mentoring staff.
• Ability, willingness and capability to travel for regional and international remote assignments as required.
• Ability to stay calm and self-motivated whilst working under pressure and in possibly adverse environments
• 4-year technical degree, ideally in electronics and/or communications engineering (or equivalent education/experience/ training) or Higher Diploma in Broadcast Engineering, Electronics or a related field.
Desirable
• Management/leadership experience from other relevant professions e.g. electrical engineering, metalwork, carpentry, vehicle maintenance, A/V Installation, IT support, photography, sound engineering, cine production, equipment hire, telecoms, military signals, avionics, and airfreight/shipping.
• Experience of work in hazardous environments/war zones
• Competency with languages and experience living/working internationally.
• First Aid and health and safety training/experience
• Valid driving license, preferably with medium/large (C) vehicle category and experience of driving overseas.
• Manufacturers training courses are highly desirable, Eg. BBC technical training courses, Sony Broadcast maintenance training, Cisco Network engineering, Adobe Creative Cloud, Evertz etc and in-house training.
