Job Description
The Role:
The Producer provides editorial guidance to a team of writers based in London and Atlanta and is responsible for taking CNNI show's to air. They determine the rundown, react to late breaking news, and are in the control room as programmes go to air.
The Daily:
• Responsible for all aspects of the show, taking the programme to air from the control room.
• Determines which stories will be presented in a newscast and how those stories will be presented.
• In the run-up to the show, ensures all scripts are written, all graphics have been ordered and completed and all video material is in place and ready to air.
• Coordinates the efforts of the writers and PAs who assist in the programme production.
• The Producer must know and understand all of the daily stories and what treatments the stories deserve for the show. To that end, the Producer spends a large part of the shift studying wires and interacting with the assignment desk, supervisors and the show team to determine just how CNNI will be covering and presenting stories each day.
• After determining which stories will appear in the programme and their treatment, the producer must a build a ''rundown'' to guide the programme.
• Producers will also be required to write some elements of the show, most often the show open, teases and set-ups for special segments; the Producer must then execute the rundown in the control room.
• Oversees the control room staff who get the show on air based on the rundown.
• Must be prepared to change the running order at a moment's notice if the news changes or in case of technical problems.
• Leads post-mortem with Copy Editors, Supervisors and the show team to discuss how the show went on air. The Producer should also give feedback to the guest booking team on show guests and also give ideas and some guidance on guests requested for future shows.
• Also required to contribute to the digital strategy of the show and come up with ideas for coverage storytelling on-air and online.
• The Producer may be asked to work on other CNNI shows from time to time.
The Essentials:
• Thorough knowledge of international news, regional affairs and business news
• Substantial experience in broadcast journalism
• Good control room experience outputting newscasts
• Good knowledge of television production
• Excellent written and verbal English
• Experience in a news environment.
The Nice to Haves
• Languages other than English, especially regional languages, are an advantage.
• Specialty knowledge of an industry, subject matter or region of the world is advantageous.
