News Desk Associate (Freelance)

We are seeking a strong candidate to join the CBS News Radio Network editorial team. The News Desk Associates are an integral part of the content creation and editorial newsgathering process for the CBS News Radio Network. Responsibilities include assisting in the gathering and editing of audio content for air and station use, and in the verifying of facts and accuracy of material and information from sources and newsmakers. Desk Associates coordinate with stations and correspondents on requests as well as support Assignment Editors in the newsgathering process. Candidate should have a passion for news and skills to succeed in deadline-driven environment. This is an entry level position.

This is a WGA union freelance opportunity with a minimum of 1-2 days a week.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Responsible for processing pieces/files sent in by reporters and affiliates (and alerting the newsroom of those files).
• Push material to our affiliate website at the direction of an Assignment Editor.
• Coordinate two-ways between affiliates and correspondents.
• Search online news sites and social media for stories.
• At direction of Assignment Editor, reach out to interview subjects.
• Process podcasts to content management systems.
• Send out advisories to stations.
• Post hourly headlines to Social Media Platforms
• Monitor newsroom email and phone

QUALIFICATIONS: Position requires at least a college degree (2- or 4-year) in broadcast journalism or relevant experience at a station, media organization or newsroom. Person must be extremely organized and have strong writing, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills. Candidate needs to be a motivated, self-starter who can work independently as well as in a team environment. Multi-tasking and prioritization skills are a necessity, as well as the ability to adapt in a constantly changing 24 x 7 news environment. Availability to work weekends and overnights is critical.
