The Role

BuzzFeed News, a Pulitzer prize-winning digital news organization, is looking for a senior visual editor with 6 – 10 years of experience who's interested in working at a fast-paced newsroom. BuzzFeed News delivers the biggest news, the latest in entertainment, and unmissable writing about life, culture, and the internet to the next generation of readers. Our coverage has the range: On the same day we can break down the latest influencer or celebrity drama while also investigating the abuses of some of the most powerful people, companies, and governments.

Under the guidance of the Design Director, who is based in New York, the senior visual editor will create, commission, and research art for a variety of story types. Working with the highly collaborative art desk, as well as editors and reporters across the newsroom, you will conceptualize visually ambitious and unique solutions for a variety of challenges. Additionally, the visual editor will help manage and develop BuzzFeed News' visual language, from brand standards to story formats. Successful candidates will have a remarkable portfolio, and demonstrate solid news judgment, and an ability to manage multiple projects and timelines. Previous editorial/news experience is preferred. The position is based in New York, but remote locations will be considered.

You Will
• Work with the design director and art department to conceptualize and produce visuals for our journalism
• Assign photographers and illustrators to cover the biggest stories in news
• Experiment with new ways of telling stories, and new formats for our journalism
• Produce shoots with celebrities, products, and people
• Commission illustrations and photos

You are:
• A creative problem solver and visual storyteller with 6-10 years of experience
• Interested in ideas, and how to bring those ideas to life
• A self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines
• Someone who can work independently, as well as part of a team

You Have
• A portfolio of top-notch work
• Experience in news or have a background in editorial
• A keen eye for details
• Proven ability to produce photo shoots of different sizes, from still life to portraits
• Willing to experiment and try new things
• Fresh ideas and unique angles into news stories
• An expert-level knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and other design tools
• A working knowledge of HTML / CSS / Javascript preferred
• A working knowledge of Figma is preferred, but not required
• Excellent news judgment
